The most recent search for Asian carp in Lake Calumet has come to a close, and officials say they didn’t catch a single carp. Crews spent four days fishing after silver carp DNA was found in the lake.

According to attorney Thom Cmar for the Natural Resources Defense Council, this doesn’t mean there aren’t Asian carp out there somewhere.

“These fishing techniques are very hard to use in catching Asian carp — very inefficient — it’s like searching for a need in a haystack when you’re using a pitchfork. You can go through  the haystack and thrash around in the hay and maybe if you catch one, you’ll catch one by luck,” he said.

Fishing crews use electric jolts to stun fish and have large nets set up around the lake for catching them.

Spokesman John Rogner for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said the DNA could have come from low numbers of carp in the lake that crews missed, or it could have come off boats traveling through the waterways.

Rogner said crews will continue searching for Asian carp into November.
