This I Believe:

…that the event on Wednesday, December 8 is going to be a one-of-a-kind evening.
…that the Fourth Presbyterian Church will be packed.
…that Bob Edwards’s pursuit of the personal stories of regular individuals is in the spirit of both Edward R. Murrow and Studs Turkel.
…that cheese is simply the perfect compliment to anything edible.

Of all of life’s big questions, “What do you believe?” is both one of the most important and one of the hardest to answer. Public radio host Bob Edwards and Executive Director of This I Believe, Dan Gediman, will lead audience members on an exploration of personal belief with the help of audio excerpts from Edward R. Murrow’s original 1950’s series as well as live readings by local essayists who have contributed to the collection. Edwards will sit down with each essayist to talk more about their own personal philosophy allowing the audience to learn about the project’s history and the thinking behind the contemporary essays shared. The conversations will be recorded for broadcast at a later date.

This I Believe is an international project engaging people in writing and sharing essays describing the core values that guide their daily lives. More than 90,000 of these essays, written by people from all walks of life, have been collected: archived online, heard on public radio, chronicled through books, and featured in weekly podcasts. By asking individuals to write and share their personal philosophies, This I Believe also hopes to encourage people to develop acceptance of—and even respect for—beliefs different from one’s own.

The Neighborhood Writing Alliance got in on the action and held an essay contest of their own; the four winning essays are now posted on their new blog.
