Update, July 28, 2014, 12:30p.m.: Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson has announced that Police Chief Wade Ingram resigned last week, and is being replaced by Deputy Chief Larry McKinley.

A 25 year old Gary, Indiana man made his first court appearance today on charges that he murdered a police officer.

The man is facing up to 65 years in prison – and possibly the death penalty – for allegedly killing Gary Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield. Westerfield was shot sitting alone in his patrol vehicle in the early morning hours of July 6th. The officer’s death has raised questions about whether Gary police have enough resources to protect the city – and themselves.

This week WBEZ’s Michael Puente tagged along with a Gary cop on the night shift and has this exclusive report.
