This summer, downtown Chicago restaurants will be open a little bit later.

An ordinance proposed by Alderman Brendan Reilly of the 42nd ward that would allow outdoor patios and rooftop gardens to stay open an hour later passed through city council Wednesday morning.

The ordinance will move the closing time from 11 pm to midnight for outdoor downtown establishments.

The new time change will last until December 1st.

A spokeswoman from the Illinois Restaurant Association says the rule change will let restaurants bring in more revenue during the summer months. She says downtown Chicago restaurants should benefit from the same hours available to restaurants in the suburbs. 

The IRA hopes the ordinance will be extended past the December 1st expiration.
