A Chicago woman on a humanitarian aid ship raided by Israeli forces over the weekend is reportedly not hurt. The incident, where at least nine people died and many were injured, has stoked anger and response in Chicago.

It’s not clear what, exactly, happened on the ship. The United Nations Security Council has called for an impartial investigation. But to Awad Hamdan, with American Muslims for Palestine, there’s very little gray area about what the Israel Defense Forces did.

HAMDAN: the IDF used live ammunition on innocent civilians, who were simply trying to bring aid to a besieged people.

But Dan Elbaum from the American Jewish Committee in Chicago says that Israel had reason to believe the passengers were armed.

ELBAUM: This ship purposefully was set out, and the organizers could not have been more clear, that the intention was to force a confrontation and run against the blockade.

Several activist groups have organized a pro-Palestinian rally for this afternoon at the Israeli consulate in downtown Chicago.
