Parental purse strings palaver

Yesterday Eight Forty-Eight broadcast an essay by a young writer in Chicago who gets a $1000 monthly stipend from her parents to help her if she "spends a little too much on shoes or let the heat bill get too high." It's sparked a lot of comments, not to mention a thirty minute conversation between me and my wife this morning. The essay's author feels a tension between pursuing a profession she enjoys and pursuing financial independence. It seems to me that there's a third way she could approach her situation- changing her lifestyle to fit her income. What do you think?
