The poet Clayton Eshleman has been translating Cesar Vallejo’s poetry since 1958, when he was a student at Indiana University. Clayton Eshleman apprenticed himself to poetry while in Kyoto, Japan, in the early 1960s, by committing to a translation Cesar Vallejo’s European-based Poemas humanos. He received the National Book Award in 1979 and the Landon Translation Prize from the Academy of American Poets in 2002 for various Vallejo translations.
