Eight Forty-Eight

Poverty experts describe situation in Chicago

President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a war on poverty close to 50 years ago--news this week revealed that the fight is far from over. The U.S. Census Bureau released new and sobering numbers Tuesday: Nearly one in six Americans lived in poverty in 2010. The numbers were grim but did not reveal much about what poverty actually looks like. To find out what the numbers meant for Chicagoans, Eight Forty-Eight was joined by a local expert on poverty and social services – Scott Allard from the University of Chicago, and Tony Escobar, the director of community relations at Breakthrough Urban Ministries in East Garfield Park.
