Writers from the Neighborhood Writing Alliance (NWA)‘s community based writing workshops will be reading short selections of their work which has been published in the Journal of Ordinary Thought (JOT).

The Neighborhood Writing Alliance engages adults in low-income communities in writing and dialogue about family histories, personal experiences, and neighborhood issues. Our weekly writing workshops held throughout the city of Chicago create opportunities for adults to learn from one other, gain insight and new perspectives on community issues, and express themselves creatively.

Selected writing from the workshops is published in the Journal of Ordinary Thought, an award winning bound journal illustrated with art from a variety of community based partners, photographers, and artists. The writers and their work are presented in readings and events throughout the city in collaboration with organizations including the Chicago Public Library, Columbia College’s Urban Missions Program, DePaul University, the Goodman Theater, and social service organizations such as St. Leonard’s House. As a way to further engage its participants and others interested in community and social justice issues, NWA also produces the Every Person Is a Philosopher blog which can be found at www.jot.org.
