Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he won’t go along with budget plans that include cuts to education. Legislators in the House of Representatives have approved a budget package that would cut $200 million to schools. The plan would keep Illinois spending levels about equal to what the state brings in.

Quinn said he wasn’t pleased with the proposal from the House.

“You have to have a governor who is a goalie for education, who understands how important it is to having good, strong citizens who are good participants in our democracy. So when the legislature says they want to cut back in education, that’s, to me, an alarm bell and we have to look very carefully at their proposal.”

In the past two years, the General Assembly passed a lump-sum budget that forced Quinn to make specific cuts. Quinn said he has not asked for another lump-sum budget this year.
