Illinois’ governor signed new workers’ compensation regulations into law Tuesday. The changes are expected to save the state hundreds of millions of dollars.

The new regulations are meant to help clamp down on abuses of the workers comp system. It puts caps on some carpal tunnel claims and denies claims from workers who are injured while intoxicated.

Republicans were on-hand for the bill-signing, but say it doesn’t go far enough. Others involved in the crafting of the bill were also present at the signing. They included David Vite with the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, who said the bill is an example of a good compromise.

“If you’re really hungry and you want a big steak and all you can get is a good sandwich, you take the sandwich. And we got a great sandwich here, folks,” he said.

The workers’ comp changes are expected to save state government at least half a billion dollars.
