The Thorndale El train stop in Chicago officially closes for renovations Friday night for about six weeks. It’s part of an $86 million project to fix some of the worst stops on the Red Line.

Thorndale will be the third Red Line station out of seven to get a makeover. Argyle is next, shutting down on August 24th, followed by Berwyn, Lawrence and Jarvis - all for six weeks and all causing temporary headaches for Red Line riders. Repairs range from adding security cameras to waterproofing station roofs.

Chicago Transit Authority President Forrest Claypool says later on this year, the Loyola station will undergo major renovations.

“There might be some inconveniences, but it won’t be any shut down or anything that should impair mobility by students. But the final product both for the university and community and neighborhoods will be terrific,” Claypool said. 

Then it’s on to the south side of the Red Line, where a rebuilding project from 95th to 22nd is scheduled to start up in May.
