We learned today that our longtime colleague and Chicago’s beloved jazz voice Dick Buckley passed away. He was 85. Dick was a host/disc jockey in Chicago radio for decades and spent the latter part of his career spinning records (literally) on Sunday afternoons on WBEZ. His final show aired in 2008. Dick Buckley meant so much to so many musicians, producers,‚  members of the Jazz industry and radio professionals. He was the gold standard for music radio in Chicago and a man whose presence was always felt. Being a young radio producer at WBEZ, I worked with Dick for 13 years. But I didn’t know him. He was Dick Buckley and that intimidated the hell of out me. Later in his career, I worked with him a few times while producing 848, but even still, I was in awe. Dick was the biggest voice and personality WBEZ had to offer.But more than my little experience with him, I share with the rest of Chicagoland in this loss. His work, which broadcast every Sunday afternoon, was consumed by millions of Chicagoans. People have stories about where they were living, what they were doing and who they were trying to be while listening to Mr. Dick Buckley. So, we wanted to keep a guest book of sorts, for Chicagoans to remember and say goodbye to the great Dick Buckley. We will be sharing archive tape and follow-up stories on our music site.
