Powerhouse gospel singer DeLois Barrett Campbell could have gone solo years ago. Instead, she and her sisters performed as a trio for more than 60 years. The Barrett Sisters’ went global with their gospel but they remained deeply rooted in Chicago’s South Side. The girls grew up listening to the father of gospel— Thomas A. Dorsey—during his time as music director at Chicago’s Pilgrim Baptist Church. The ladies paid it forward by inspiring a new generation of vibrant voices: Singer Jennifer Hudson visited Barrett Campbell the day before she died. DeLois Barrett Campbell died in Chicago Tuesday; she was 85. Funeral arrangements are pending.
