Two suicides inside Illinois’ juvenile prisons shined a light on how the state handles the mental health needs of incarcerated kids. So almost a year ago, the Department of Juvenile Justice commissioned a major investigation into the policies and practices around behavioral health. An independent team assembled by the MacArthur Foundation visited the state’s 8 youth prisons. Their long-awaited report is out today. WBEZ’s Gabriel Spitzer joined editor Ammad Omar to talk about the findings. Ammad asked him why it’s important to know how the state handles juveniles with mental health problems.
