Reporter Who Exposed Burge Torture Not Expecting Much From Daley Deposition

The reporter who exposed torture by Chicago police in the 80s and 90s says he’s not expecting much from a scheduled deposition of former Mayor Richard Daley on the scandal.

John Conroy is an investigator for Northwestern’s MacArthur Justice Center.

He said Daley knew, or should have known, about torture under Commander John Burge when Daley was Cook County State’s Attorney.

Conroy said if the January deposition for a federal lawsuit actually happens it will be the first time the former mayor faces hostile questioning about Burge under oath.

“I know the city probably doesn’t want to put him through the agony of being deposed about this pretty painful aspect of his career,” Conroy said. “But I think that if he is deposed he will say I don’t remember, I don’t recall, and the deposition will not amount to much.”

A Chicago Law Department spokesman declined to comment.

Daley’s spokeswoman could not be reached.
