The abortion debate has a long and tangled history in American politics. This panel examines that history and its ramifications for and on the body. Professor Reva Siegel of Yale Law School discusses her bestselling book Before Roe v. Wade, an analysis of the most important arguments that influenced the Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 decision. After her presentation, Siegel joins University of Chicago professors Gerald Rosenberg and Christine Stansell for a conversation that seeks to place Roe v. Wade in a larger political and social context. Geoffrey Stone, professor of law at the University of Chicago, moderates.
