Dr. Justin Wolfe, associate professor of Latin American History at Tulane University, explores the often hidden history of the African Diaspora in Central America. Despite the region’s role in the earliest colonial slave trade and the fact that people of African descent constituted the majority of the nonindigenous population long thereafter, popular and scholarly work has tended to exclude all but the Caribbean coasts of the region from historical narratives or contemporary debates. This talk draws on the main themes of his ongoing research in Nicaragua and his recent coedited collection, Blacks and Blackness in Central America: Between Race and Place (Duke University Press, 2010), to explore new avenues of study and challenges ahead.

Recorded Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the Center for Black Diaspora—DePaul.
