“U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says she’s optimistic diplomacy will succeed in Iran.

Rice spoke today before the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations.

She says the U.S. wants to mobilize the international community around the view Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.

""In order to turn the Iranians back from what has been behavior that has been contrary to all of the wishes of the international community … we are prepared to use measures at our disposal, political, economic, others, to dissuade Iran from the course that it’s on,"" Rice says.

Rice also says Americans should be prepared for more violence in Iraq. She says conquering terrorism in Iraq will be a gradual process.

Meantime, Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says he hopes the talks with Iran are successful.

He says the other alternatives, like attacking that country, are unacceptable.“
