Before he became the most celebrated newspaper columnist in Chicago, Mike Royko was just a skinny kid nobody from the Northwest side. But he had a big love – for his childhood friend, Carol Duckman. Since they were pals, Mike never revealed his true feelings. That is, until destiny opened the door to a great love affair.

Their son David Royko collected and edited letters his father sent to his then sweetheart Carol while an airman during the Korean War.

The letters are beautifully compiled in David’s new book, Royko In Love: Mike’s Letters To Carol.

David Royko recently talked about the book, the letters, and his dad with Eight Forty-Eight’s Jason Marck. Royko says these letters represent the Holy Grail of his nuclear family.
