Eight Forty-Eight

Sad Brad Smith finds his song in a major Hollywood film

Fate works in mysterious ways. For local musician Brad Smith, it came in the form of an old high school buddy, Philip Sternberg. Sternberg came across a tape of Smith’s songs and thought they’d be perfect for a film his brother in law was making. The brother in law? Jason Reitman.  And the film? "Up in the Air." And now the man who likes to call himself Sad Brad Smith is a lot happier. His song “Help Yourself” underscores a pivotal moment in the Oscar-nominated film, and he dropped by "Eight Forty-Eight's" studios right before Oscar night to share his story and, his music. Here, we revisit a short excerpt from that interview, plus a performance of “Help Yourself.”
