By Fyodor SakhnovskiCombining elements of jazz, hip hop, soul, trip hop and even chanting, Scarlet Monk creates unique and haunting soundscapes with operatic flavor. But music is not the only focus of her diverse creative passions. On stage, she is known to deliver a theatrical and dramatic experience often involving interpretive dancing, stage props, unique costumes and women being packed inside cardboard boxes or getting tangled in rolls and rolls of film tape. She focuses on engaging audiences both aurally and visually.
She describes her sound as “slow and deliberate;” the same could be said about her approach to music: for years Scarlet Monk has been taking small steps in winning people’s attention in the underground music circuits. But now she’s ready to take a major leap forward with the release of her debut LP AnnaBella. Scarlet Monk joins Jesse Menendez on Vocalo’s MusicVox to discuss some of the concepts behind her new album, her approach to writing music, as well as her theatrical shows and upbringing in rural Poland.
Scarlet Monks’ CD release show will take place on August 26 at Red Kiva (1108 W Randolph) at 9pm.
