Congressional Democrats are holding firm against a plan to extend tax cuts from President George W. Bush’s time in office. That includes Democrats from President Barack Obama’s home state of Illinois.

Mr. Obama wants to extend tax cuts for wealthy Americans in addition to the middle class. In exchange, Republicans say they’ll support an extension of long-term unemployment benefits.

But Democrats, like Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Illinois, say they won’t support the bill.

“It isn’t so much anger at the president as it is the prerogative of the House of Representatives to assert its role in this whole process,” Schakowsky said.

Schakowsky called the plan the equivalent of giving a tax break to Paris Hilton. She said the cuts help the rich get richer.

Meantime, Democratic Congressman Jesse Jackson, Junior says he’s worried the deal will lead to cuts in social programs. Mr. Obama says if Congress approves the cuts, he will push for an overhaul of the tax system in the next two years.
