The U. S. Green Building Council’s latest program is Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development. LEED ND communities are developed closer to existing city centers, offer easy access to transit, and are often infill sites or previously developed sites. The City is sponsoring one of the largest LEED ND projects in the country at the former U.S. Steel site, which will serve as a model for future urban development.

Marilyn Engwall has worked for the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development, now the City’s Department of Community Development, since 1992. Her professional experience includes neighborhood commercial development, community development planning, and industrial redevelopment projects. She is currently responsible for redevelopment initiatives for a 30 square mile area of the city. Marilyn has initiated and is currently managing the designation of the 1140 acre South Chicago LEED Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) initiative plan which will be the City of Chicago’s guide for sustainable redevelopment in this south side community for the next 25 years.
