The Illinois Supreme Court yesterday denied an emergency motion from local news organizations to get records unsealed in the R. Kelly child pornography case.

The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Associated Press sought to make transcripts and other documents public. The court denied WBEZ’s motion to join as moot.

The state Supreme Court didn’t give a reason for denying the motion. Damon Dunn represents the newspapers and is disappointed by the decision.

DUNN: Continued secrecy only breeds suspicion. Right now people are guessing and I doubt that anyone involved in this case is getting the benefit of the doubt from the public.

R&B singer Kelly is charged with 14 counts of child pornography. He has pled not guilty. Kelly’s attorneys argue that the release of information would impede jury section and the entertainer’s right to a fair trial. T

The news organizations, including WBEZ, will argue their case again before Cook County Circuit Judge Vincent Gaughn on Thursday – a day before Kelly’s trial is scheduled to begin.
