Study: Do School Closings Impact Students Academically?

Youth violence has become a recurring theme among Chicago news headlines in the past couple of years. And in those stories, much has been made about the role school closings plays in increased tensions among Chicago Public Schools students. Since 2001, the district has closed 44 schools for poor academic performance or for what CPS calls “underutilization.” When schools close, students’ lives are radically changed. But how does the move to a new school affect their academics? A new University of Chicago study looks to answer that question. One of the study’s authors, Julia Gwynne tells us more. Gwynne is from the Consortium on Chicago School Research.
