Supreme Court: Obama IS American, afterall
The Supreme Court quietly rejected a claim today that Barack Obama isn't eligible to become President, on account of his heritage.‚ Here's a blurb from the AP.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court has turned down an emergency appeal from a New Jersey man who says President-elect Barack Obama is ineligible to be president because he was a British subject at birth. The court did not comment on its order Monday rejecting the call by Leo Donofrio of East Brunswick, N.J., to intervene in the presidential election. Donofrio says that since Obama had dual nationality at birth - his mother was American and his Kenyan father at the time was a British subject - he cannot possibly be a "natural born citizen," one of the requirements the Constitution lists for eligibility to be president. Donofrio also contends that two other candidates, Republican John McCain and Socialist Workers candidate Roger Calero, also are not natural-born citizens and thus ineligible to be president. Now, while this may seem like a far-fetched assertation, the theory got heavy play on the internet.‚ Take the always amusing Hannity forums, for example.‚ ‚ Well over 1700 PAGES of discussion on this topic so far.‚ Consensus: The Supremos got this one wrong.‚ (NOTE: Please remember, the Hannity forum will NOT allow discussion of assassinating‚ US political candidates.‚ Hopefully, no one actually needed that reminder...) Even though the claim didn't get a whole lot of traction in the mainstream press, the Obama camp took‚ the allegations seriously enough to address them on their website, fightthesmears.com.‚ ‚ They even provided a nice picture for all to see.
You be the judge.‚ Or leave it to the Supreme Court.‚ Either way is fine by me. These guys still aren't buying it.‚ They say the image above is phony, but I guess it doesn't really matter what they think at this point.
