Illinois test scores for high school students are nearly flat. That’s according to a new analysis of state standardized test scores from the Illinois State Board of Education.

Robin Steans is with the advocacy group Advanced Illinois. She says school officials need to show high school students how lessons can be applied outside the classroom.

STEANS: Same academic rigor, but building in real world experiences so the kids understand how their classroom work relates to the real world. So I think we’re going to have to take a close look and see if those things start to bear fruit.

Steans says the new data reveal some progress in scores of elementary school children.

The report says 80.9 percent of elementary students passed state math, science, and reading tests.
