The 2009 Election: A New Coalition for Germany?

Dr. Dieter Roth, one of Germany's leading election analysts and an expert in political science, economics, and sociology, analyzed the outcome of the 2009 German federal elections and discussed how the election results will impact Germany and the transatlantic partnership.

Was the election campaign more “Americanized” than in 2005, as many analysts allege? What coalitions are possible after the election and how might they affect the transatlantic partnership? What issues were important in the election campaign and were there surprises? What domestic and foreign policy goals will Germany pursue after the election? What issues arose during the campaign that could be points of  tension or agreement - within a coalition government as well as in Europe and in transatlantic relations? These and other questions were addressed during Dr. Roth's presentation.

Recorded Wednesday, October 07, 2009 at Goethe-Institut Chicago.
