Jackson Lears, Board of Governors professor of history at Rutgers University, traces the changing attitudes toward craftsmanship in the 20th-century United States high and popular culture, looking specifically at work produced at Cranbrook, Black Mountain, and Penland. He also discusses the post–World War II do-it-yourself movement, concluding with reflections (following Matthew Crawford and Richard Sennett) on the eclipse of craftsmanship in the workplaces of the Information Age.
