Good morning!

Welcome to this edition of the Morning Drive Podcast! In today’s episode, we hear from Chicago Sun-Times columnist Stella Foster about her upcoming retirement.

But first, some news:

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is doubling down on his opposition to a state gambling expansion bill.

Governor Pat Quinn is also pushing for a ban on assault weapons in Illinois. The governor used his amendatory veto power Tuesday to alter a bill that would have allowed Illinois residents to purchase ammunition and have it shipped to them.

Chicago cab drivers made their case for a fare hike at a public hearing on Tuesday at city hall. Chicago’s cab fare hasn’t gone up since 2005, and cab drivers say a new ordinance that took effect in July isn’t helping them.

Featured in the podcast:

Stella Foster wants a stress-free vacation; a break without looming deadlines, missed scoops and demanding readers. The longtime writer of the Chicago Sun-Times’ “Stella’s Column” is calling it quits on August 3, almost 43 years after she started at the paper. She stopped by the Afternoon Shift Tuesday to talk about her retirement.

And your WEATHER for today: It’s gonna be pretty foggy out there in the morning but otherwise it will be mostly sunny, highs from the mid 80s near the lake to the upper 80s inland.
