Thursday, March 8, is International Women’s Day, and what better way to recognize women than with music.

Tonight’s show features guest co-host Brigid Murphy, a Chicago performance artist, writer, teacher and entrepreneur. She helps with the celebration by bringing in some of her favorite female artists like Edith Piaf and Cesaria Evora.

International Women’s Day was first clebrated in the U.S. as National Woman’s Day in 1909.

A year later, participants at  a Socialist International meeting in Copenhagen proposed  an International Women’s Day to honor the women’s rights movement.

Today it is officially celebrated in many countries including Mongolia, Ukraine and Vietnam but not here in the U.S.
