By Lauren ChooljianA group of Latino leaders are calling on Chicagoans to peacefully protest the Donald Trump rally this Friday.
Trump takes the stage at the UIC Pavilion just a few days before the Illinois primary on March 15, and U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Chicago, is trying to gather a diverse group of protesters to welcome Trump when he arrives.
“We will not allow Donald Trump to come to Chicago without raising our voices to denounce his bigotry, his hatred and his prejudice. Chicago is a city that is unified and works together,” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez was joined Monday by a handful of Chicago aldermen and Latino activists, but they won’t be the only ones demonstrating outside the Trump event.
Thousands of people have shown interest in a Facebook event for a separate Trump protest. Some opponents are also registering for tickets to the Trump speech with no intention of going, in the hopes that the audience won’t fill up.
