Tuesday’s game plan for ‘Afternoon Shift’: Paying dues

WBEZ brings you fact-based news and information. Sign up for our newsletters to stay up to date on the stories that matter.

Let’s get into it! As a rule, WBEZ doesn’t mention candidates on election day. It actually makes it very hard to produce relevant radio. But hey, it gives us a chance to not follow the headlines and talk about other issues from around the region. There are plenty.

Andre Williams will peform live in our studios (Bloodshot Records)

Today on the #Afternoonshift:

Listen to the first hour of the show

We’ve all heard that one in two marriages end in divorce.  But there’s a new trend.  Boomer-age couples who stayed together “for the sake of the kids” are untying the knot once they become empty nesters. Is this swaying the stats? Loyola Professor (and WBEZ blogger) Al Gini dives into the greater meaning. I think we just all want to be 19 again.

Plus, performing live today is Andre Williams. The Chicago native has been called “one of the last living links to the heyday of dirty R&B, super-soul and first generation booty funk.” He has a new album out on Bloodshot Records called Hoods and Shades.  Andre Williams and the Goldstars perform live on the Afternoon Shift.  They’ll also perform this Friday night at the Hideout in Chicago.

Each day, we invite two esteemed members of the Chicago media elite to discuss the stories Chicago is talking about.

Today: The sketchy stats behind speed cameras; the police chief says weekend violence wasn’t because of warm weather (then what is causing it?) and Rosie O’Donnell didn’t work in Chicago. Why? with Chicago Tribune Reporter Kristen Mack and Vocalo Host Brian Babylon.

Listen to the second hour of the show

The New York Times is tightening up its paywall.  What will be the impact on the news consumer, and what does it mean for the paywall model of dishing out information? Ken Doctor from Newsonomics fill us in on the changes and what digital news trends are taking shape in Europe.

Legendary photographer Lee Balterman has passed away. We’ll look back on his life and his work with photography curator Paul Berlanga of the Stephen Daiter gallery.
