The head of the University of Illinois’ Board of Trustees has resigned. The resignation comes amid an investigation into the school’s admissions system.

Niranjan Shah was Chair of the nine member Board of Trustees and the second board member to resign as a special commission set up by Governor Pat Quinn wraps up its investigation into alleged admissions abuses.

On Friday, Shah said he had no plans to resign. But in a brief letter to the governor today, Shah says it was clear from statements by the panel last week that the entire board should step down.

Shah had been the Chairman for less than a year, and came under fire recently after University records revealed he tried to get friends and relatives to the front of the line when it came to admissions, housing and employment.

Later this week, the commission is expected to release it recommendations on the to prevent further abuses in the schools admissions system.
