With the primary over, one candidate in northwest Indiana is gearing up for the November general election with an eye toward being the first Latina lawmaker to be elected to the state House.

Mara Candelaria Reardon says she’s not setting out to make history, but that’s exactly what could happen. Reardon won last week’s Democratic primary to represent Indiana’s 12th District in the General Assembly.

She says if she wins in November, it will be an honor, but a perplexing one.

“I think it’s amazing that in 2006 I would be the first Latina in the state legislature. It’s amazing we haven’t had one to date,” she says.

Reardon appears to have some advantages. So far, there’s not a Republican challenger for the fall election. Republicans did not run a candidate in the primary, but they still have time to enter a candidate for the general election.
