Traffic in downtown Chicago might be a little less hectic starting Friday. The construction on Wacker Drive is complete, and the final parts of the project will reopen in two phases.

Gabe Klein is the commissioner for the Chicago Department of Transportation. He said driving and walking around the area will be easier now that there are fewer up and down ramps between Upper and Lower Wacker. He said that will eliminate conflict points for drivers and pedestrians.

“It’s more of a boulevard type system with a larger, well, first of all, a better layout. But also larger ped refuges. So when you’re crossing the street, there’s actually a place for the pedestrian to actually wait,” he said.

The intersection at Wacker and Van Buren reopens Friday morning. The Lower Wacker and Congress Parkway Interchange is expected to open early Friday afternoon.

The $300 million project took about two and a half years to complete.
