Remember the good old days when you could be a politician’s cousin or childhood friend to get a job with the Water Reclamation Department?

These days, the ‘Chicago Machine’ is actually a machine. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation Department of Greater Chicago is looking to hire a slew of laborers to work in various sewage plants. Instead of just hiring those laborers based on merit or clout, the department will accept applications in the form of your social security number. Then, they will draw lotto balls to see who is eligible to apply for the job. And I’m not using ‘lotto balls’ loosely, the department will borrow an actual ‘Illinois Lotto Pick 4 game’ to draw winners. The drawing is this Sunday. They will publish the winning numbers in ‘newspapers’ afterward and if the last four digits of your social security number matches, you can apply.

So you have to literally win the Lotto to get a job with the Water Department. It pays $22.89 an hour and you have to take a basic skills test and pass a drug test.

PDF is attached. The notice also warns “people in these jobs may work in unpleasant surroundings and be exposed to unpleasant odors.”

So in other words, be prepared to work with poop, y’all.
