The unseasonably warm weather is causing problems for some outdoor ice skating rinks around the city.

The Chicago Park District announced four of the seven rinks will open later than scheduled because it’s been too warm to make the ice.

The rinks were scheduled to open Friday but now the Mt. Greenwood Park, Riis Park, and Rowan Park locations are expected to open on Saturday. The rink at Wrigley field isn’t expected to open until Wednesday.

Westrec Marinas oversees the ice skating rinks for Chicago Park District. The firm’s executive vice president, Scott Stevenson, said they’ve been trying to freeze ice for more than a week.

“The ice rink surfaces are chilled,” explained Stevenson. “But they are still subject to the laws of physics and when it’s warm we just can’t make ice.”

He said the Riis Park and Wrigley field rinks have been particularly difficult to freeze because of the combination of warmer weather with the sand base.

“You know mother nature has her way sometimes,” explained Stevenson.  “The weather is suppose to get colder after that and hopefully we’ll have lots of days for people to come out and enjoy skating.”

The skating rinks in McKinley Park, Midway Plaisance Park, and Warren Park will open on Friday as originally scheduled if the weather permits.
