Tony Sarabia’s radio show, Radio M, will be taped live in a special performance commemorating how we celebrate holidays and traditions. At 6pm, play a round of trivia curated by Tony himself. Then, enjoy performances from Saraswathi Ranganathan and Heavyweight Dub. After that, we’ll open up the dance floor for the Balkan Tamburitza Band K.G.B.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS
Saraswathi Ranganathan is a versatile Veena artiste with a dynamic track record of individual and collaborative performances, workshops, teaching at prestigious venues across the US and India. Saraswathi passionately believes in her goal of bringing people together in one platform through the eternal fragrance and perennial freshness of artistic unique music that cuts across all barriers of race, religion, culture, and color. Saraswathi endeavors for refreshingly soft Veena aesthetics that can be intimately experienced in the rapturous dimensions of the listeners’ hearts – with an aim to create a joyous and harmonious space in this cosmos.
With Heavyweight Dub, Veteran Chicago drummer Ted Sirota aspires to resurrect the full, rich, fat sound of the “Golden Era” of Reggae music. Taking his cue from the great Jamaican studio bands and musicians of the 70’s & early 80’s, Sirota hopes to put some of the spotlight back on the fine musicianship that was the foundation of Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae music, but has taken a back seat to “star” singers in recent decades.
Although Heavyweight Dub is dedicated to the Roots tradition, they continue to look to the future by experimenting with sound, electronics, and incorporating modern riddims into their original compositions, prompting this response from Midnight Raver.com - “In this new era of laptop liquidators, lightweight beats, and weakheart riddims, SCIENTIST MEETS TED SIROTA’S HEAVYWEIGHT DUB is a pure and true blessing from the Kingdom of Dub.”
The KGB Tamburica Orchestra features two cousins (Joe and Steve Kirin) and two brothers (Joe and Nick Gornick) all who are of Croatian descent and comprise the Kirin-Gornick-Band. They perform their music on traditional stringed instruments native to regions of the former-Yugoslavia called the Tambura. The Tambura can be most often most often found in the areas of Slavonia, Croatia and Vojvodina, Serbia but can also be found in other areas of the world including the US and Canada.
KGB members are seasoned performers who have been honing their musical skills since childhood. Each has performed with first-class musicians and singers from America, Canada and the Balkans. Their repertoire and interpretation of the various Balkan styles of music result in exciting and soulful renditions that often leave the audience dancing, singing, and smiling.
