This is a golden day at the WBEZ blog. The organization is welcoming former Sun-Times media columnist Robert Feder to our 0n-line community. He will be writing exclusively for us on all things Chicago media. I grew up in the Chicago area and went to Columbia College. When I was in the radio department, our first assignment was to read Feder habitually. And I did. I used to buy the Sun-Times, open to the middle and read Robert Feder first. Then I would go back and start at the front page. It was always a thrill to open the column and read about Chicago media and your colleagues. I’ll never forget that column, Feder’s headshot, the format and the ink on my fingers. That experience and Feder’s column was something unique to Chicago. It was for Chicagoans. That was what the newspapers used to be. A trusted source. A friend. A media bible. I wasn’t the only one who read that column religiously. Over my career here at WBEZ, I’ve been mentioned a handful of times in Feder. And every time my name was printed, I would have a slew of e-mails and several phone calls from colleagues in the business. Now, I don’t expect the new Feder blog to tell me whose birthday it is and/or who got a promotion at Kiss FM. This blog is about media trends and larger issues affecting the Chicago landscape. I, for one, can’t wait.
