As some of you may have read or heard, our colleagues at American Public Media informed us on Friday that they’re ceasing production of “Weekend America”. The final broadcast is scheduled for January 31st, 2009. According to APM, the decision was driven by “the current economy’s impact on station carriage and sponsorships” and will lead to the elimination of 13 full and part-time positions. Earlier this month, NPR announced it will be ceasing production of “Day to Day” and “News and Notes” in March. Many of us have come to enjoy - and indeed contribute to — Weekend America over the years as it was a program solicited and supported independent, creative work from freelancers and member stations like ours. We’re sorry to see it go — and will continue airing the show Saturdays at 2pm through January 31st, but will begin searching for a replacement in short order.
