The Chicago Park District is holding its annual “Polar Adventure Days” at Northerly Island.

This past Saturday, mushers brought their dogs and sleds to hold demonstrations, and other groups brought an assortment of animals for people to see, including a porcupine, a wolf and a skunk. The free monthly winter program features slightly different animals and activities each time.

“This event tries to highlight the natural space here and then to (give) people, families in Chicago, an experience they might not get ordinarily in the city,” said Tish Daniels, who’s in charge of programs for Northerly Island.

Daniels said the event lets people enjoy nature, right in the city. Northerly Island is located just south of the Adler Planetarium.

If it snows, visitors can check out skis or snowshoes to trek across the 91-acre park.

There are two more dates in January and February.
