Wisdom Across The Grades: PreK, 8th, 12th And College Grads Share Their Stories
By WBEZ StaffIt’s graduation season for people of all ages, from 5-year-olds moving on to kindergarten to adults working toward a college degree.
WBEZ’s education desk visited four graduations in the Chicago area this year, seeking stories and wisdom of 2019 grads spanning the grades.
Below, each graduate offers advice to students coming up behind them.
Cindy Alvarez, graduate of Kennedy-King College in Chicago.
“Give back where you have received. No one is successful by themselves. So go out there and say thank you. Go out there and help someone else out.”
Maryori Urbina-Contreras, graduate of Waukegan High School.
“My advice to you guys is to never give up; to figure out who you are and what you like; to never limit yourself.”
Safiya Martinez, eighth grade graduate of Rogers Park Montessori School in Chicago.
“Focus on organization and planning ahead … and then also [make] sure you’re not procrastinating too much … If you leave it for the night before, it’s so stressful.”
Shamiya Parajuli, preschool graduate of Truman College’s Child Development Laboratory School in Chicago, with her mother Soney Shrestha.
Shamiya shares the advice in her preschool song: “Helping hands, walking feet, listening ears, taking turns and quiet voices.”
