Directed by Chicago-based filmmaker Dawn Sinclair Shapiro, The Edge of Joy looks at maternal mortality rates in Nigeria, which are among the highest in the world. The film takes the viewer into the midst of a busy maternity ward and closely follows an ensemble cast of Nigerian doctors, midwives and families to the frontlines of maternal care. Later in the hour, we talk to two doctors: one from the University of Chicago’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and one from the Centre for Population and Reproductive Health at University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria. Introduced by Shapiro, they’re forging a partnership between their hospitals to share best practices on improving women’s gynecological health.
