Today, we bring you the fourth installment of our weeklong Here, There series on abortion. Russia has one of the highest rates of abortion in the world. In the 1980s, there were 200 abortions for every 100 babies born in the Soviet Union; and those numbers only capture abortions done in state facilities. Russian leaders, worried about declining birth rates, see the issue as a threat to national security. In the next installment in our weeklong series on abortion, we speak with Michele Rivkin-Fish, author of the book Women’s Health in Post-Soviet Russia. She says Russia’s tumultuous history with reproductive issues began in 1920, when it became the first country to give women access to voluntary abortions.
