The Iranian opposition group Mujahedeen Khalq is on the U.S. State Department’s list of terrorist groups. It also counts among its allies influential Americans, such as Rudy Giuliani, Howard Dean and former joint chief of staff Peter Pace. We get analysis from Worldview regular Nari Safavi. Also, until recently, Ecuador’s Afro community was isolated and invisible. Then Ecuador became successful on soccer’s world stage, largely due to Afro-Ecuadorian players. We speak with Ecuadorian-American filmmaker Betty Bastidas about how a small, neglected community ended up dominating Ecuadorian soccer. And, artist Susana Baca singlehandedly put Afro-Peruvian music on the map in the mid-1990s. Recently, she became Peru’s Minister of Culture and the first black minister since independence from Spain. WBEZ contributor and Latino Beat host Catalina Maria Johnson tells us more about Baca’s career and shares some of her favorite Afro-Peruvian tunes.
