Polish immigrants Tony and Janina Wasilewski lived for years in suburban Schiller Park and ran a small cleaning business. But due to complications with her immigration status, Janina was forced to leave the country in 2007. Now their story, recounted in the documentary Tony and Janina’s American Wedding, has a surprise happy ending. In a rare government move, Janina was granted a waiver earlier this month and returned to Illinois. We talk to the newly-reunited couple and their lawyer. And on Global Notes, we meet Chicagoan Mehran Jalili. He was about to go to law school when he discovered flamenco. He bought a ticket to Spain instead. Now Mehran teaches at the Old Town School of Folk Music and merges flamenco rhythms with Persian melodies. He brings his guitar into the studio and shows us his chops.
