Cigarettes are one of the top causes of preventable deaths worldwide. The global effort to fight cigarette smoking received a massive boost in 2005 with the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the first global public health treaty. We speak with Dr. Judith Mackay, senior advisor to the World Lung Foundation, about what’s next in the global campaign to curb smoking. Then, we continue our Here, There series on abortion around the world with a look at Mexico City, which legalized abortion in 2008 – a controversial move in the heavily Catholic country. The decision prompted a backlash, with several states imposing further restrictions on women seeking to terminate unwanted pregnancies. And, several countries in Latin America forbid abortion under all circumstances, including rape and risk to the mother’s health. Ana Langer, a professor at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, joins us to discuss reproductive issues in the region.
