This week, Palestinians will ask the U.N. Security Council to recognize an independent state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, arguing that they have the necessary infrastructure to sustain themselves as a nation. Both the U.S. and Israel strongly oppose the move. We examine what U.N. recognition would mean with Colum Lynch, a Washington Post correspondent who blogs about the United Nations for Foreign Policy. Later, we examine the case of Ukraine’s former Prime Minister and opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, who was jailed under accusations of abuse of power. After a large outcry from the international community, her trial was put on hold. We get analysis from Ukrainians in government and academia.
